If you’re done being unhappy, then here are 10 tips you need to become a happy person, without pretending everything is fine.

As a kid, I wasn’t happy like the other kids around me were.
Sure, there were moments when I laughed a lot or felt light and carefree, but my default state was usually stressed.
I worried about things a lot, and as a result, my mind was rarely quiet.
And when you live like that for years, you start believing that maybe this is just who you are.
Maybe some people are naturally happy, and some people simply aren’t.
But everything came to a turning point for me in my late teen years when I started college and eventually had to take a year away because things had become too overwhelming.
That period forced me to pause in a way I never had before.
When life slows you down like that, you start noticing things. You start asking questions you had been too busy to ask before.
And one question kept returning to my mind again and again was: Do I actually want to live my whole life feeling this way?
The answer was a resounding ‘no’. I wanted to be happy, like the chirpy characters I read about in my favorite romance novels.
Happiness Is Something We All Need
We all have different identities in life.
Some of us are writers, some are social butterflies, and some are quiet readers who prefer their own company.
Some of us love adventure, and some love routine.
But no matter what personality you have, what hobbies you enjoy, or what career you choose…happiness is something we all need.
Because when you are happy, you don’t linger in the past. You feel peace with the present and hopeful about tomorrow.
Over the years, I’ve slowly worked on becoming a happier person. This blog would never have existed if I hadn’t taught myself to be happy.
So in this post, I want to give 10 tips that anyone can work on to be a happier person.

These have all come from my personal experience, so you can be assured that they actually work. Read on!
10 Ways To Be a Happy Person
1. Decide That Happiness Actually Matters
This might sound obvious, but many people never consciously decide that happiness is important.
We prioritize productivity, success, and even what other people think of us. But happiness sits at the bottom of our priorities.
The moment my mindset started changing was when I realized that happiness isn’t something that just happens to lucky people.
It’s something you actively build into your life.
Think about it this way.
If someone says they want to become healthy, they usually start doing things that support that goal. They start walking, drinking more water, and eating better food.
In the same way, becoming a happy person requires small choices that support your happiness.
This doesn’t mean ignoring real problems or pretending life is always easy.
It simply means asking yourself: What choices would make my life feel lighter?
Once you start viewing happiness as something worth prioritizing, you naturally begin making decisions that protect it.

2. Stop Treating Your Mind Like Your Enemy
One of the biggest reasons people struggle to feel happy is that their mind is always working against them.
They entertain negative thoughts. They overthink, imagine worst-case scenarios, and replay awkward and painful moments.
My mind, too, was like a chaotic room where every thought was shouting at the same time.
What helped me the most was realizing that thoughts are not commands. They are simply mental events that pass through your mind.
Just because you think something doesn’t mean it’s true.
And just because your mind produces a negative thought doesn’t mean you need to entertain it.
You need to learn to pause and question your thoughts.
Instead of immediately believing every stressful idea that pops into your head, ask yourself if it’s actually true and if it’s helping you.
Most of the time, the answer would be no.
The more you learn to observe your thoughts instead of blindly believing them, the calmer your inner world will be.
And a peaceful mind is one of the greatest foundations for happiness.

3. Spend More Time Outside (Nature is Magic)
If there is one habit that has consistently improved my mood over the years, it’s spending time outdoors.
There is something incredibly grounding about stepping outside and simply existing in the world for a while.
You feel the sunlight on your face, fresh air filling your lungs, and trees moving softly in the wind. With so much positive stimulation, how can a mind ever be unhappy?
Whenever I feel stuck in my thoughts or overwhelmed by life, going outside almost always helps me.
You don’t need to hike mountains or live near a forest for this to work.
Just sit on a balcony with your coffee, and go for a walk every day for a few minutes. Watch the sky change colors in the evening, and catch the sunrise some mornings.
Nature reminds you that life is bigger than the worries inside your head.
And this important reminder can bring a surprising amount of peace and joy to your heart.

4. Build Small Rituals To Make Your Day Good
Everlasting happiness doesn’t come from big things. Most of the time, it grows from small everyday things that make your day good.
And you can actually seek these everyday joys by creating rituals in your routine.
For example, my favorite happiness rituals are:
• Morning coffee in silence
• Going for a walk while listening to music
• Writing in my journal
• Reading a few pages of a good book
• Making my room feel cozy and organized
None of these things is extraordinary, but they make me happy, and so I do them every day.
When you repeat little rituals that bring you comfort, your life becomes warmer and more intentional.
Your days don’t feel like you’re just surviving them. They feel like something you’re gently shaping.
And that feeling can be incredibly positive and uplifting.

5. Move Your Body In Some Way
People usually move their bodies to be better physically. But movement has a powerful effect on your emotional state.
Exercise releases chemicals in the brain that improve mood, reduce stress, and increase feelings of well-being.
It’s amazing how much lighter your mind feels after moving your body for a while.
But beyond the science, it’s also deeply satisfying to take care of your body.
You send a message to yourself that you care about your well-being. And that message slowly builds self-respect, which is closely connected to happiness.
You can pick up anything gentle, like yoga, riding your bike, or simple home workouts.
Personally, I’ve learned that walking is one of the best mental resets. It is easy to stick with and makes you get out more.
For a person seeking happiness, movement should be at the top of their list, because it actually works.
6. Protect Yourself From Negativity
The environment you place yourself in plays a big role in your happiness. Your mind absorbs a lot more than you realize.
Surround yourself with negativity (pessimistic people, toxic online content, or endless bad news), and it will be very difficult to be happy.
That’s why you need to learn to protect your mental space from things that can affect it badly. It is incredibly important.
Be more intentional about what you let into your life, mind, and space.
For example:
- Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate
- Limit how much news you consume
- Create boundaries against draining people
- Spend more time around supportive people
- Keep your space decluttered to avoid physical negativities
If you start choosing environments that feel genuinely good, happiness will become way easier to cultivate.

7. Do Things That Make You Feel Alive
You know what’s one of the quiet happiness drainers? It’s monotony.
When every day feels exactly the same, life slowly loses its spark and you start being unhappy.
Does this mean you need all-time excitement and drama to be happy? Not really.
But what you do need is to add small pockets of joy and curiosity into your routine.
You can do this by:
- Try new hobbies
- Explore a new cafe every weekend
- Start a creative side project
- Take a spontaneous walk somewhere new
- Learn something interesting
- Cook new dishes and bake more often

Doing new things wakes up your brain and reminds you that life still has surprises waiting for you.
Some of the happiest people I know are simply people who stay curious about life. They keep learning, exploring, and letting life surprise them.

8. Practice Gratitude In Real Ways
Gratitude is often talked about in self-help spaces, but sometimes it’s presented in a way that feels forced and unrealistic.
The kind of gratitude that actually improves your happiness is simple and honest.
You don’t practice gratitude by pretending that life is fine and perfect. You get yourself to notice good things that already exist in your life.
Things like a good meal, a kind message from someone, a peaceful moment in the evening, and the sound of rain outside.
When you regularly stop to notice these moments, you become better at noticing the positive in life.
And the more good things you notice, the happier your overall outlook becomes.
Gratitude doesn’t erase difficult days, but it gently balances them and creates more space for happiness.

9. Stop Waiting For Life To Be Perfect
Many people believe they will finally feel happy once certain conditions are met.
They want to be happy, only once they lose weight, or have more money, or when they move to a better place.
They think that when their problems are gone and their life is perfect, then they will finally be happy.
But life rarely works that way. There will always be challenges, uncertainties, and imperfect situations.
If your happiness depends on everything going perfectly, it will always remain just out of reach for you.
But if you learn to appreciate life as it is right now, your happiness will become much more accessible.
You need to simply stop seeing happiness as something you deserve or something that needs certain conditions.
You can still work toward goals and improvements, but you don’t have to postpone happiness until some imaginary perfect future arrives.
Real happiness is accepting where you are, while also moving toward where you want to be.
And mark my words, with happiness in your pocket, you might even achieve your goals much faster.

10. Choose Hope, Even When Life Is Hard
At the heart of happiness lies one powerful idea, which is hope.
Hope is what allows you to believe that life can improve. It is what keeps you moving forward even during difficult periods.
And hope is something you can consciously choose to nurture.
You nurture hope by taking small positive actions and surrounding yourself with encouraging people.
You cultivate hope by reminding yourself that life has many chapters, and the current one is not the final story.
Even when things feel uncertain, hope will keep the door open for better days. And it will make your normal days feel good, too.
And that quiet belief can make an enormous difference in how you experience life.

Let’s Make You Happier
If you’ll notice, nowhere in this post have I implied that being happy means being cheerful every second of the day. That is not realistic at all.
Real happiness is softer than that.
It’s the ability to return to a sense of peace after difficult moments. It’s waking up feeling curious about the day ahead.
It’s finding joy in simple things and believing that your life can be good.
If you’ve struggled with happiness before, please know that it doesn’t mean something is wrong with your life.
It just means you haven’t yet built the habits and mindset that support happiness.
And the beautiful thing is that those things can be learned, and the tips in this post will help you with just that.
