Check out these 31 New Year’s Eve party ideas to throw a spectacular bash that people will remember forever.

There are parties, and then there are New Year’s Eve parties.
It’s the one night when wearing sequins at home feels perfectly reasonable.
Sparkly drinks are mandatory, and sleeping before midnight is not even an option.
And if you’re hosting a New Year’s party this year, you might as well make it a night people actually remember.
You don’t need a massive house, an elaborate dinner menu, or a party that looks like it was planned by an event company.
A few really fun details can completely change the mood, which is what you’ll find in this post.
So, whether you’re throwing a big NYE bash or inviting your favorite people over for a cozy celebration, here are 31 New Year’s Eve party ideas you’ll want to look at.
31 Fun New Year’s Eve Party Ideas
1. Hire A Tarot Reader

Since I have recently gotten into tarot myself, this idea is going straight to the top of this list.
Hire a tarot reader for an hour or two and let your guests get mini readings for the year ahead.
You could set up a little corner with candles, velvet fabric, fairy lights, and a couple of chairs to make the whole thing feel mysterious and magical.
If you already know how to read tarot or oracle cards yourself, you could even do simple one-card pulls for everyone.
Ask something like “What energy should I take into the new year?” and let everyone see what they get!
2. Make Little Gift Boxes For Your Guests

Instead of traditional party favors, put together little New Year’s gift boxes for everyone to take home.
They don’t have to be expensive either. Add tiny chocolates, a mini candle, sheet masks, cute socks, tea sachets, lip balm, fortune cookies, or anything else that fits your party.
You could even slip a tiny handwritten note into each box wishing them something lovely for the year ahead.
It’s such a sweet way to end the night.
3. Make The Party Silver-Themed

Gold gets a LOT of attention on New Year’s Eve, but imagine an entire party covered in silver.
Silver balloons, metallic streamers, disco balls, tinsel curtains, silver candles, shiny tableware, and little stars hanging from the ceiling.
Tell everyone to wear silver, white, grey, or black, and suddenly your living room looks like a very chic little NYE universe.
Bonus points for an absurd amount of glitter.
4. Set Up A Temporary Tattoo Station
This is such an easy party activity, and somehow adults get just as excited about temporary tattoos as children do.
Pick metallic stars, moons, tiny hearts, zodiac symbols, glittery designs, or fun NYE-themed tattoos and leave them out with everything guests need to apply them.
By 11 p.m., everyone will inexplicably have a tiny silver star on their face (as they should).
5. Light Sparklers At Midnight

Right before midnight, hand everyone a sparkler and head outside.
Do the countdown together, light them once the clock hits twelve, and take approximately 400 blurry-but-cute pictures.
Just make sure you’re somewhere sparklers are permitted, and you have a safe place to dispose of them afterward.
There is something ridiculously joyful about starting January 1st surrounded by tiny sparkling lights.
6. Serve Sparkly Champagne

If there was ever a night to make your drinks unnecessarily pretty, this is it.
Serve champagne, prosecco, sparkling juice, or mocktails in beautiful glasses and give them the full NYE treatment.
Think edible glitter, berries, sugar rims, little stars, or cute drink charms so everyone knows which glass is theirs.
Make a tray right before midnight so everyone has something ready for the toast.
7. Get Photo Booth Props

You know those photos you randomly find three years later and immediately remember the entire night? We want those.
Create a photo booth corner with a sparkly backdrop and ridiculous props.
Set up oversized glasses, feather boas, crowns, hats, speech bubbles, and anything else that will make people actually want to take pictures.
A Polaroid camera would make this even more fun because everyone can leave with an actual photo.
8. Have A Masquerade Party

If there is one night of the year when you can casually ask your friends to show up wearing masquerade masks, it’s New Year’s Eve.
Turn your party into a masquerade evening and ask everyone to dress up a little fancier than usual.
Put out feathered and jeweled masks for people to choose from, light a bunch of candles, dim the lights, and decorate with velvet bows, metallic details, and fairy lights to make the whole evening feel slightly mysterious.
You could even keep the masks on until midnight and take them off once the countdown ends.
Very dramatic, and very new year, new chapter energy.
9. Have A Disco Ball Corner

If buying a giant disco ball for one night seems excessive, I’d like to respectfully disagree.
Create one ridiculously sparkly corner using disco balls in different sizes, fairy lights, metallic fringe, and candles.
It becomes instant party decor and the place everyone naturally ends up taking pictures.
And once NYE is over? Congratulations, you now own a disco ball. Life has improved.
10. Make A Midnight Snack Bar

Forget serving all the good food at 8 p.m. Save something exciting for after midnight!
Set up a midnight snack bar with fries, mini pizzas, popcorn, sliders, instant noodles, grilled sandwiches, cookies, or whatever your group would genuinely get excited about eating at 12:30 a.m.
There is something elite about eating fries in party clothes after ringing in the new year.
11. Make A Balloon Ceiling

This is one of those decorations that takes a room from we invited some friends over to PARTY.
Fill the ceiling with silver, white, black, gold, or transparent balloons and let ribbons hang down from them.
You could even attach little photos from the past year to some of the ribbons.
Suddenly your ceiling is part decoration, part memory wall.
12. Create A “Leave It Here” Box
New Year’s Eve doesn’t have to be a self-improvement meeting, but I do love the symbolism of leaving something behind.
Put out pieces of paper and ask guests to write something they don’t want to carry into the new year.
It can be a habit, a fear, a grudge, an embarrassing situationship, or a belief that they need to have everything figured out.
Fold the papers up and put them in a box, so they can stay in the old year.
13. Get A Colorful Cake

I live for three things in life: Dogs, self-care rituals, and cakes. So any party without a cake is not even a possibility for me.
Get yourself the most colorful and creative cake for your party!
You can get bright frosting, cherries, colorful piping, sprinkles, flowers, or bows.
Get “Happy New Year” piped across the top, add some funky candles, and bring it out sometime before midnight so everyone can gather around for cake and pictures.
It’ll add such a happy pop of color to the party, especially if the rest of your decor is metallic and sparkly.
Also, starting the new year with cake seems like a pretty solid decision to me.
14. Make It a Fries And Burger Party

Skip the fancy New Year’s Eve dinner and have a fries and burger party instead.
Order a ridiculous amount of fries, get a bunch of burgers (or make mini ones at home), and spread everything out on the table.
You could even serve the fries in cute paper cups and wrap the burgers in checkered paper to make the setup look like your own little diner.
This idea is proof that New Year’s Eve does not have to be classy. It just has to be a good time.
15. Put Fortune Cookies On The Table

Give every guest a fortune cookie to crack open before midnight.
You can buy regular ones or make personalized paper fortunes and tuck them into cute little envelopes instead.
It gives everyone a tiny “message from the universe” before stepping into January, which feels very appropriate for New Year’s Eve.
16. Set Up A DIY Charm Bar
Put out chains, ribbons, beads, charms, and little pendants and let everyone make something to take into the new year.
It could be a bracelet, necklace, bag charm, or phone charm.
You can even pick charms based on what you want more of—hearts for love, stars for dreams, keys for new beginnings, little books for creativity.
It doubles as an activity and a party favor.
17. Have A Fancy Pajama Party

Not every NYE party needs heels. And if that’s the mood you’re in this year, then this idea is for you.
Tell everyone to show up in their prettiest pajamas, robes, fluffy socks, satin sets, or cozy matching PJs.
Add champagne glasses, candles, snacks, face masks, movies, and a pretty tablescape so it still feels special rather than like an accidental sleepover.
This would be especially cute for a smaller girls’ night.
18. Take Polaroids

Keep a Polaroid camera somewhere within reach and make it your mission to capture the night as it actually happens.
Take pictures while everyone is getting ready, holding their sparkly drinks, attacking the fries table, dancing around the living room, and waiting for the countdown to begin.
You can let everyone take a Polaroid home at the end of the night, or keep one from each guest and make a little New Year’s Eve page in your journal afterward.
It’s basically a party favor and a memory rolled into one.
19. Create A New Year Wish Tree
Put a few pretty branches in a vase and leave tiny cards nearby.
Throughout the night, everyone can write down something they’re wishing for in the coming year and hang it from the branches.
By midnight, you’ll have a little tree covered in everyone’s hopes for the year ahead.
You can keep the wishes private or read them aloud if your group is comfortable doing that.
20. Make A Dessert Table

NYE dessert deserves its own space. It is, after all, a once-in-a-year event.
Cover a little table with cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, cookies, macarons, cake pops, brownies, or a beautiful cake and add metallic stars, disco balls, candles, and edible glitter.
Even supermarket desserts look fancy when you put them on pretty plates and surround them with sparkly things.
21. Make A Signature NYE Drink

Instead of stocking your kitchen like a full bar, choose one special drink for the night.
Give it a ridiculous name, make a tiny menu card for it, and serve it in your prettiest glasses.
Definitely make a non-alcoholic version too so everyone gets the fancy drink experience. You get bonus points if it’s sparkly!
22. Make A Wall Of Memories From The Year
Print out photos from trips, birthdays, random coffee dates, blurry nights out, screenshots, funny moments, and ordinary days that somehow became memories.
Stick them onto a wall with fairy lights, stars, ribbons, or little handwritten captions.
People can stand there talking, laughing, and reminiscing on the good old times. A pretty cool way to honor the old year and all that it made happen.
23. Have A Candlelit Dinner Before The Party

If you’re hosting a smaller group, start the night with an actual sit-down dinner.
Turn off the harsh overhead lights, cover the table in candles, use the nice plates you’ve been “saving,” put bows around the napkins, and make it feel like everyone has arrived at a tiny New Year’s restaurant.
Then clear the plates, turn the music up, and let dinner slowly turn into a party.
24. Create A Countdown Wall

Make the countdown to New Year’s part of the decor.
Hang a big chiming clock on the wall, decorated in New Year style. Over it, you can put up a lit-up sign of the new year to come.
You can also put up envelopes or little bags labeled with different times throughout the night—9 PM, 10 PM, 11 PM, 11:30 PM, and midnight.
Each one can contain something for everyone to do: open the photo booth, bring out dessert, make predictions, pour the midnight drinks, or hand out sparklers.
It will keep the night moving without making the party feel overly planned.
25. Give Everyone A New Year’s Crown

Yes, it’s cheesy. That’s why it’s fun.
Put sparkly crowns, tiaras, metallic headbands, or little party hats near the entrance and make everyone choose one when they arrive.
You cannot take yourself too seriously while wearing a glitter crown that says HAPPY NEW YEAR, and I think that’s beautiful.
26. Make Midnight Confetti Poppers

Have a basket of confetti poppers ready for everyone before the countdown starts.
At midnight, pop them all at once.
Will you find tiny pieces of confetti under your sofa until March? Possibly.
Will the pictures be worth it? Also possibly.
If you’re hosting outdoors, choose biodegradable confetti or skip this one so your New Year’s memory doesn’t become litter.
27. Make A “Next Year Bingo” Card
Create bingo cards filled with funny or exciting things that could happen during the next year.
A spontaneous trip. Someone gets bangs. A new relationship. A big career change. Someone finally learns to cook. A friend moves. Someone gets a pet.
Everyone takes their bingo card home and checks things off throughout the year.
You’ll have to reunite next December to see who actually got bingo.
28. Prepare a Jello Shots Tray

If you’re having a proper New Year’s Eve party with drinks, make a tray of Jell-O shots for everyone to grab throughout the night.
You can keep them classic or make them match your party theme with different colors, edible glitter, tiny sprinkles, or little stars on top.
Arrange them all on a pretty tray and suddenly humble jello shots are looking surprisingly festive.
Make a separate alcohol-free batch too if you have guests who aren’t drinking, because nobody should have to miss out on the wobbly little party snacks.
Just label the two trays very clearly. We are entering the new year with good decisions—or at least clearly marked ones.
29. Drop Balloons At Midnight

Bring a little Times Square drama into your living room with a balloon drop at midnight.
Fill a balloon-drop bag or net with silver, white, gold, or colorful balloons and hang it from the ceiling before everyone arrives. When the countdown hits zero, release the whole thing over the party.
It’s dramatic, slightly chaotic, and will make midnight feel like an actual moment instead of everyone just yelling “Happy New Year!” from different corners of the room.
30. Play Everyone’s Song Of The Year
Before the party, ask every guest to send you the ONE song that defined their year.
Put all of them into a playlist without revealing who picked what.
Throughout the night, play the songs and have everyone guess whose song it is.
You’ll probably get everything from heartbreaking ballads to songs that were played 700 times during someone’s gym phase.
31. End With A Toast For The Year Ahead

And finally, don’t let the countdown happen while half the room is looking for their phone charger.
A few minutes before midnight, gather everyone together, pour the drinks, hand out the sparklers, and actually be present for it.
You don’t need a profound speech.
Toast to the weird year you just survived, the people standing around you, the things you’re hoping for, and all the stuff you can’t possibly predict yet.
Then count down together.
10…9…8…
And just like that, you get another beginning.
Happy New Year!
