Waking up to a world covered in snow? Here are 20 snow day activities to help you make the most of it, whether you’re heading outside or staying wrapped in a blanket all day.

I just finished my annual rewatch of Gilmore Girls, and the one line that’s stuck in my head on loop is, “I smell snow.”
Lorelai’s enthusiasm for snow in the show perfectly mirrors that of every snow-lover around the world.
And even if you aren’t a fan of the white wonder, you can’t deny that snow is magical and the feelings it can evoke are magical too.
But as adults, we tend to waste snow days.
We spend them doomscrolling in bed, feeling vaguely guilty about all the things we’re not doing, and then wonder how the day just goes away.
Not this season, my friend.
A snow day is a rare bonus, a little gift from the universe, and it deserves to be spent on purpose.
So, I am sharing my list of 20 snow day activities.
Some get you out in the snow, some keep you cozy by the window, and a few are simply just about savoring the moment.
Mix and match depending on your mood, your weather, and how many layers you own.
Ready? Let’s get into it!
20 Fun and Cozy Snow Day Ideas
1. Build a snowman (or snow-woman, snow-cat, snow-anything)

Let’s start with the classic — making something out of the snow!
If the snow is the packable kind, roll a few big balls, stack them up, and get creative.
Use scarves, buttons, carrots, sticks, and whatever you can find around the house to give your creation some personality.
Don’t be shy about going over the top. A snowman with sunglasses and a hat has way more charm than a perfect one.
You can also invite a friend, a partner, or a neighbor to join you. Making something silly together is the quickest way to feel like a kid again.
2. Make snow angels

This activity takes about thirty seconds, but it never gets old.
Find a patch of fresh, untouched snow, lie down on your back, and sweep your arms and legs back and forth to create a you-sized snow angel.
If you’re feeling extra, make a whole group of angels with your friends and take a photo from above.
Just make sure you’re bundled up first, so you don’t end up soaked and freezing five minutes later.
3. Go sledding

If you have access to a hill and a sled (or even a sturdy tray or plastic sheet), sledding is a must!
You’ll need a gentle slope with plenty of space at the bottom, and away from roads, trees, or water.
And then you guys take turns and go down together if the sled allows.
You’ll scream, you’ll laugh, and you’ll climb back up the hill again and again, even though your legs are burning.
Wear waterproof pants and a helmet if you plan to go fast, and always check the area for hazards before you start.
4. Take a snowy walk

There’s nothing quite like a walk after fresh snowfall.
The world is hushed, the trees are frosted, and everything looks like a postcard.
So, put on your warmest layers, waterproof boots, a hat, and gloves, and head out with no destination in mind.
Walk through a nearby park, along a quiet street, or through a wooded trail.
Let yourself slow down and notice the small details, like footprints, icicles, and the way the light hits the snow.
Bring a flask of something warm (hot cocoa is my choice here) and your favorite playlist (I can’t walk in the snow without listening to ‘Tis The Damn Season at least once).
It’s a lovely way to clear your head.
5. Have a snowy photoshoot

So long as the world is covered in white magic, you might as well get some pretty pictures out of the day.
Snow makes everything look magical, and the soft light is incredibly flattering.
Grab a friend or a tripod, and snap photos in your coziest outfits.
Chunky knits, bright scarves, and a pop of red or yellow stand out beautifully against the white.
And yes, do take candid shots, like laughing, walking, or throwing snow in the air. They always look better than stiff poses.
6. Set up a hot chocolate bar

When you come in from the cold, you deserve a proper reward, and what’s better than a bar of hot chocolate?
Warm up a big pot of hot chocolate, and set out all the toppings. Marshmallows, whipped cream, crushed candy canes, caramel drizzle, cinnamon, and chocolate shavings all work.
Put it in your prettiest mugs, wrap yourself in a blanket, and sip it by the window while you watch the snow fall.
Don’t have the time or the ingredients to go all out? A good mug of cocoa and one sweet topping is perfectly delicious, too!
7. Bake something warm and delicious

Snow days and baking go together like, well, hot chocolate and marshmallows.
So, pick a recipe that will make your home smell incredible, and get baking!
You can make cinnamon rolls, banana bread, chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, or a fresh loaf of bread.
Put on some music, tie on an apron, and take your time in the kitchen. It’s so soothing to measure, stir, and wait for something to bake.
Share the results with a neighbor or a friend, if you can. Warm baked goods are one of the best gifts you can give someone on a cold day.
8. Make a big pot of soup or stew

A long and slow simmer is the ultimate snow day cooking project.
Chop a pile of vegetables, add your favorite spices and a good broth, and let it bubble away on the stove for hours.
Chicken soup, tomato soup, lentil stew, and chili are all lovely choices.
Serve with crusty bread or grilled cheese for the full comfort experience.
The best part is that your home will smell wonderful all day, and you’ll have leftovers for the rest of the week.
9. Have a movie marathon

Today is the perfect day to work through your watchlist.
Set up your couch with blankets, pillows, and snacks, and line up your favorite movies or shows.
Mix in a few comfort classics, a cozy rom-com, and something you’ve been meaning to watch for months.
Turn the lights down low, put your phone on silent, and give yourself permission to do nothing else.
If you want to make it special, pick a theme, like winter movies, favorite book adaptations, or a series you can binge.
10. Curl up with a good book

If a snow day doesn’t call for reading, I don’t know what does.
Choose a book that makes you feel something, whether it’s a cozy mystery, a heartwarming romance, or a fantasy world you can disappear into.
Settle into your favorite chair or your bed, with a warm drink and a soft blanket.
Let yourself get lost for hours. No schedule, and definitely no guilt.
If you’ve been in a reading slump, this is your sign to start over with something short and fun.
Sometimes a day off is all you need to fall back in love with books.
11. Do a jigsaw puzzle

I can’t imagine a winter season without a new jigsaw puzzle. It’s just the coziest way to spend time indoors while it’s freezing outside.
Buy a design you love ahead of the snow season. And then on the first snowy day, spread it out on a table, and start with the edges.
Put on some soft music or a podcast, and settle in with a hot drink.
There’s no rush, and no pressure. You’ll lose track of time, and you might even finish it by the end of the day.
It’s also a great activity to do with a friend or family member, since everyone can pitch in and chat while you work.
12. Play board or card games

Snow days are perfect for getting everyone around a table.
Pull out the board games, card games, or dice that have been gathering dust.
Make some snacks, pour some drinks, and settle in for a long afternoon of friendly competition.
You can play something old and classic, or learn a new game together.
If you’re solo, there are plenty of fun solitaire-style games and puzzle apps to explore.
13. Build a blanket fort

There’s no age limit on blanket forts. They’re the best, and nobody can tell you otherwise.
So, do it when it’s too packed to venture outside! You know you want to.
Gather all your blankets, pillows, and cushions, and drape them over chairs, couches, and whatever else you’ve got.
You might want to add fairy lights inside for extra magic.
Once it’s all done, climb in with a book, a snack, and a cup of cocoa, and enjoy your cozy hideout.
14. Have a spa day at home

You’re already staying in, right? So, why not pamper yourself?
Run a warm bath with bubbles or bath salts, and light a candle.
Do a face mask, give yourself a manicure, and put on your softest pajamas afterward. Dim the lights, and play something relaxing.
Skip the phone, and let your body fully unwind.
After a busy week, a snow day is a golden opportunity to rest and reset, so take it.
15. Do a cozy home reset

If you want to feel productive without feeling stressed, then you can do a gentle home reset.
Put on a playlist, light a candle, and tidy up one area at a time. Wash the sheets, organize a drawer, clean out the fridge, or rearrange a shelf.
Keep it light and fun, not exhausting. The goal is to make your space feel fresh and peaceful.
There’s nothing quite like finishing the day in a clean, cozy home with the snow still falling outside.
16. Write in your journal

A snow day is the best time to slow down and reflect.
So, grab your journal and a cup of tea, and write about whatever comes to mind.
How are you feeling lately? What are you grateful for? What’s something you’d like to change or try this season?
You can also write a list of goals, a letter to your future self, or a few pages of your favorite memories.
The quiet of a snowy day makes it easier to hear your own thoughts.
17. Try a new craft or hobby

Use your free time to try a creative hobby.
Pick up some paints, yarn, clay, or a candle-making kit. Follow along with an online tutorial, and see what you can create.
Knitting a scarf, painting a winter landscape, or making your own candles are all wonderful snow day projects.
Don’t worry about it looking perfect. As long as you enjoy the process, you’re doing it right.
You might discover a new favorite pastime, and you’ll have something handmade to show for your day.
18. Call or write to someone you love

If it’s been a while since you caught up with someone in your life, then use the snow day as a chance to reconnect with them.
Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, video chat with a family member, or write a handwritten letter or card to someone special.
A long, cozy phone call on a snowy afternoon feels like a luxury.
And the person on the other end will be so happy to hear from you.
19. Learn something new

Snow days are great for tackling something you’ve been curious about.
Take an online class, watch a documentary, follow a language lesson, or try a beginner’s tutorial for a skill you’ve always wanted to try.
Keep it light and focused on what interests you.
You don’t have to be productive in a serious way. Just let your curiosity lead.
You’ll end the day feeling inspired, and a little smarter for sure.
20. Do nothing and just be in the moment

Finally, my favorite snow day activities: Rest and doing nothing.
You can take a nap, stare out the window, watch the snow fall, and listen to the silence.
Basically, I am inviting you to let yourself be bored for a while, and see what thoughts come up.
We spend so much of our lives rushing, but a snow day is your free pass to pause and let yourself exist.
Don’t fill every hour of the snow day with an activity.
Because trust me, dear reader, the most restorative thing you can do is nothing at all, and enjoy it.
Enjoy Your Snow Day!
At the end of the day, a snow day is a surprise pause, a free pass to slow down and enjoy life in the present moment.
You don’t have to do all 20 of these snow day activities. Choose a couple that feels right, and let the rest of the day unfold on its own.
Build the snowman, bake the cookies, sit by the window with your cocoa, and watch the world turn white.
You deserve the joy, magic, and coziness!
