Here are 13 refreshing tips that will make you love summer and make the most of the long days of the season.

For a long time, summer and I were not friends.
Where I live, summer means intense heat, sweaty afternoons, and parks full of bugs. When you step outside, you want to immediately go back in.
While other people talked about ‘loving summer,’ I mostly spent the season counting down the days until autumn.
But for the last two years now, I have been approaching the season differently.
I realized that the problem wasn’t summer itself. The problem was that I was trying to experience summer the same way people in cooler places do.
The Pinterest images of breezy European cafes and light linen dresses look dreamy, but when the temperature outside feels like an oven, that lifestyle doesn’t always translate perfectly.
So instead of fighting the season, I decided to build my own version of summer to make it more enjoyable.
I mean, it’s the longest season of the year where I live. Spending it feeling anything less than good seems like a bad approach.
So, if you’re also someone who secretly dreads summer, or someone who simply wants to make the season feel more joyful, here are some 13 ways to actually enjoy it.

13 Ways To Enjoy the Summer Season
1. Change Your Summer Schedule
One of the biggest reasons summer feels tiring is that many of us try to keep the exact same routine we follow during cooler months.
But summer has its own rhythm, and the best thing you can do is work with that rhythm instead of against it.
Wake up early so you can enjoy the cool, quiet morning hours. Step outside for a walk before the sun becomes too strong.
Open your windows, sip your coffee slowly, and let yourself ease into the day.
Then, during the hottest part of the afternoon, allow yourself to slow down a little. Do indoor tasks, read a book, and work in a cool corner of your home.
Later in the evening, when the sun softens again, go outside for another walk or sit on your balcony and enjoy the breeze.
You see what I mean?
You need to structure your day around the natural flow of summer instead of forcing productivity through the hottest hours.
This way, the whole season will feel much more pleasant.
2. Create Small Summer Rituals

Summer becomes magical when you give it tiny traditions.
I am not talking about big complicated rituals here. In fact, the smaller the rituals are, the more likely you are to actually do them.
Your summer ritual can be making iced coffee every afternoon and drinking it slowly while reading a few pages of a book.
Or it can be cutting fresh fruit in the evening and eating it while watching the sunset.
Or it can be lighting a candle at night, journaling about your day, and letting the warm breeze come through your window.
Build one or two such rituals into your day, and feel free to change them every month.
They will help you make the season special rather than just another stretch of hot days.
3. Make Your Home Feel Like a Summer Retreat
If the weather outside feels too intense for you, then turn your home into the place where summer feels calm and enjoyable.
Switch to lighter bedding and open the windows in the evening.
Bring in fresh flowers if you can, and add a bowl of lemons or oranges to your kitchen counter.
Small visual changes like these will completely shift the energy of your home.
You can also create a cozy summer corner where you spend your slow moments.
Keep a comfortable chair near a window, a small stack of books, and a woven basket with a soft blanket for the evenings.
When your space feels light, airy, and relaxed, summer will begin to feel less like something happening to you and more like something you’re participating in by choice.
4. Eat Foods That Actually Suit the Season

Heavy meals can make summer feel even more uncomfortable.
So, instead of forcing yourself to eat the same foods you eat in winter, lean into lighter meals that naturally fit the season.
Make fresh fruit bowls, chilled yogurt with honey, simple salads, smoothies, and sandwiches with crisp vegetables.
Stock your fridge with fruits like watermelon, mangoes, peaches, and berries. They will make your hot afternoon more refreshing.
You can also create your own little summer food rituals.
Friday evenings can be fruit and yogurt night. Sunday afternoons can be for homemade lemonade.
Play around with your light meals and foods, so that your body feels naturally better during the heat, and you also get to enjoy.
5. Spend Time Near Water Whenever Possible
There’s a reason water is such a big part of summer culture.
Water cools your body, relaxes your mind, and brings a playful energy to the season.
If you have access to a beach, lake, or pool, wonderful! But if not, then just create small moments with water to bring yourself joy.
Take a longer shower after a hot day, sit near a fountain at a park, and dip your feet into a bucket of cool water while reading outside.
You could even make a simple summer habit of washing your face with cool water whenever the heat feels too much.
These little interactions with water will create tiny pockets of relief throughout the season and make you less annoyed with the rising temperature.
6. Romanticize the Evenings

If summer afternoons are too hot, summer evenings are where the magic happens.
When the sun begins to set, and the air gets soft, you get calm too. So, use that time well.
Take slow walks after dinner or sit outside with a drink and watch the evening sky.
Call a friend and chat while the breeze moves through the trees.
You could even start a simple evening routine: shower, wear comfortable clothes, make a cold drink, and step outside for a few minutes.
For me, small evening rituals during summer are the most memorable part of the summer.
My favorite one is curling up with a book on my recliner in the balcony after dinner. A fresh lemonade in hand makes it even better.
7. Bring Summer Into Your Wardrobe
Enjoying a season also means dressing for it properly. If you lean into summer clothing, it will make the days more comfortable for you.
Go for light fabrics, loose silhouettes, breathable materials, and comfortable sandals.
Get some flowy dresses, linen shirts, soft cotton sets, woven bags, and a pair of white sneakers to style with everything.
Create outfits that are physically comfortable and that you also love wearing.
If your body and mind both like what you’re wearing, it’ll be much easier to enjoy everything else the season has to offer.
8. Read Books That Feel Like Summer

I am a bibliophile, so it’s just not possible for me to talk about a season without talking about books.
I pick books based on the season, and it helps me romanticize my days.
Like, in summer, you want to go for stories that feel light, dreamy, and transporting.
You can read romance novels on warm afternoons or dive into travel memoirs or cozy stories before bed.
The right books can totally change the mood of a season.
I’d suggest making a tiny summer reading list with a handful of books you want to enjoy before the season ends.
Even if you read just one chapter a day, it’ll be enough to give you the feeling of a beautiful summer day.
9. Plan Small Adventures
We often look for big vacations to make summer feel good. But you can’t be on vacation your whole summer, right?
You need to create memorable moments with tiny adventures close to home, like:
- Visit a cafe you’ve never tried before.
- Explore a park in your city.
- Wake up early and watch the sunrise.
- Take a spontaneous evening drive with music playing.
- Try a local dessert shop you’ve always been curious about.
These small outings will break the monotony of everyday life and add little sparks of joy throughout the season.
10. Let Yourself Slow Down

Summers make you want to go fast with everything — Your health, goals, productivity, and travel plans.
But believe me, this is not the time to be in a rush (I don’t think any time really is).
Nature itself slows down during the hottest months. Animals rest in the shade, plants conserve energy, and the world goes quiet in the afternoon.
Allow yourself to follow that same slowness.
Instead of filling every day with tasks, leave space for rest. Sit with your thoughts, journal, and take naps if you need them.
If you give yourself permission to be slower, summer won’t be as exhausting and will restore you instead.
11. Spend More Time Outside in Small Ways
When we think of being outdoors in summer, we plan big, like going to the beach or a long hike. But there are other small ways to enjoy being outdoors.
You can drink your morning tea on a balcony, sit in a park under a tree, and water your plants in the evening.
Go for long evening walks, and whenever you see the weather is pleasant, take advantage and head to a park for an hour.
Being outside will remind you that summer is not just about heat. It’s also about light, greenery, and long days.
12. Pick Up a Summer Sport For Fun

When I was younger, I used to think sports were only for people who were good at them.
But the older I get, the more I realize that the joy is simply in moving your body outdoors and letting yourself play again.
This summer, let yourself be playful and pick up a summer sport just for the joy of it.
Summer has this playful energy to it, and certain activities just feel right during these months.
You can swim, play badminton in the park, try roller skating, go cycling in the early morning, or learn tennis.
Pick one thing, and stick with it for the rest of the season. You’ll come out of the summer having become good at something.
13. Create a Simple Summer Bucket List
One of the easiest ways to enjoy any season is to give it intention, and the best way to do this is to make a seasonal bucket list.
Write down a handful of things you’d love to do before summer ends.
They don’t have to be big goals. In fact, the best lists are full of simple joys.
Your summer bucket list can include activities like:
- Watch a sunset
- Make homemade lemonade
- Read a book outside
- Go for an evening walk with music
- Try a new ice cream flavor
These tiny plans will give your season shape and help you notice the good moments that might otherwise pass by unnoticed.

If you’ve never been a summer person, that’s completely okay.
Take it from a former summer hater, it is possible to make the season kinder and actually more enjoyable to you.

The season just needs a little intention and some softness, to become something you actually look forward to.
