Want to improve your mornings in the coming year? Here’s a simple morning routine for 2026 that you can follow and stick to with ease!

Most people have a goal of fixing their mornings in the new year. They think a solid morning routine is the way to go (which is absolutely correct).
And so they set their alarm for 6am on January 1st, planning to meditate for 30 minutes, journal three pages, do a full yoga flow, prep a superfood smoothie bowl, and turn into a wellness guru overnight.
But then by January 3rd (or 15th if you are persistent enough), they go back to hitting snooze and grabbing a granola bar on their way out the door.
Sound familiar? If yes, then this is the post for you, friend.
The New Year has a way of making you believe that you can change your life completely in one fell swoop.
But the secret to building your new year habits is in keeping it as simple and uncomplicated as you can.
So, for 2026, I’m sharing a simple morning routine with you.
There’ll be no unrealistic expectations, no complicated rituals that require you to wake up before the sun.
This routine has six simple steps that will genuinely make your mornings (and your entire day) feel better.

Here you go!
Simple Six-Step Morning Routine For 2026
1. Wake Up Before 8am
Let me start by saying you absolutely do not need to join the 5am club.
I see those Instagram posts of people watching the sunrise from their perfectly organized home gym at dawn. Good for them, but that’s not realistic for most of us mere mortals.
But waking up before 8am is the sweet spot for everyone.
It’s early enough that you get those precious quiet morning hours, but not so early that you feel like you’re punishing yourself.
I usually aim for 6:30am, which gives me about an hour before I need to start thinking about work or other responsibilities.
So, this isn’t necessary, but if possible, then try to wake up at the same time every day. Your body loves routine more than you realize.
When you wake up at the same time every day (including the weekends, sorry!), your internal clock adjusts, and waking up actually becomes easier.
Put your alarm across the room if you gotta. I know it’s annoying, but it works in getting you off the bed.
Once you’re up and walking, you’ll be much less likely to crawl back under the covers.

2. Drink a Big Glass Of Water Before Anything Else
This morning habit comes with every morning routine, no matter how tough or simple it is. Hardly takes any time, but it will change everything for you.
Before coffee, before checking your phone, and before even fully opening your eyes, reach for a tall glass of water. Keep it on your nightstand if you need to, and drink the whole thing.
Your body fasts and dehydrates for 7-8 hours while you sleep. A glass of water in the morning is like hitting the reset button on your entire system.
It jumpstarts your metabolism, helps flush out the toxins, and just makes you feel more human.
The moment water is fully in your system, you’ll feel the mental fog lifting and a natural energy boost. Like internal coffee, but without the jitters, and fully healthy.

3. Move For Just 5–10 minutes
I used to think morning movement meant a full workout, like 30 minutes of cardio or a complete yoga flow or hitting the gym.
But that all-or-nothing thinking is exactly what made me skip it when I was short on time or energy.
If you can relate, then you’ll love this part. You just need to get moving for 5-10 minutes, and that’s it!
You can do gentle stretching on your bedroom floor, dance to three songs, do a few sun salutations, or just take a quick walk around the block.
My favorite lazy-morning move is standing up and doing big arm circles while taking deep breaths. It sounds silly, but it works.
The point isn’t to get your heart rate up or break a sweat. It’s just to wake up your body and shake off that sleepy stiffness.
It will also help circulate your blood, release endorphins (which means better mood), and signal to your body that it’s time to be awake and alert.

4. Do a Quick Mental Reset
Before diving into your day’s activities, give your mind a moment to settle before diving into the day’s chaos.
Here are some ways to do this:
- Wwrite three things you’re grateful for in a small notebook
- Jot down your priorities for the day
- Brain-dump any worries that are swirling around
- Sit quietly with your tea or coffee
- Take five deep breaths while looking out the window
- Read a chapter of a book
- Do 2-minute guided meditation session on your phone
This will create a small buffer between your sleep time and the demands of your day.
Instead of immediately checking your phone or jumping into problem-solving mode, you’ll give yourself a moment to center and set an intention for how you want to approach the day.
It’s easy, calming, joy-inducing, and perfect way to embrace the new year mornings!

5. Enjoy A Nourishing Breakfast (or At Least Something)
I’m not going to lecture you about breakfast being the most important meal of the day. You’ve heard that enough.
But I will say this: how you fuel your body first thing sets the tone for your energy levels throughout the morning.
You don’t need to make your breakfast big or aesthetic. It just needs to be good for your body and mind.
My go-to breakfast is usually oatmeal with banana and peanut butter, or avocado toast with a scrambled egg.
I also love two boiled eggs with an apple and PNB. Other days it’s Greek yogurt with berries (love this one), or a quick smoothie if I’m running short on time.
These things take five to ten minutes max, taste good, and keep you full until lunch.
If you’re really not a breakfast person, at least have something small. A piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, or even just adding milk to your coffee gives your body some fuel to work with.
Running on empty until noon usually leads to poor food choices later and that 3pm energy crash we all know and hate.
Just try to be intentional about it, okay? Instead of grabbing whatever’s convenient, take a minute to choose something that will make you feel good.
Your body (and your productivity levels) will thank you for this.

6. Step Outside For a Few Minutes
In 2026, make it a habit to get morning nature therapy by stepping outside for a few minutes.
Don’t do it with any other intention besides to bring inner peace to yourself.
The fresh air, the natural light, the sounds of the world waking up — it all helps ground you in the present moment.
This is especially important if you work from home all day or always in a rush while heading out to the work or drop the kids of whatever (I think that’s all of us).
Getting natural light early in the day also regulates your circadian rhythm, which makes falling asleep easier at night.
This my favorite part of all the morning routines that I create throughout the year.
I take my coffee or tea outside and just stand there for a few minutes. Sometimes I notice what the weather feels like, or listen to the birds, or just appreciate that I get to experience another day.
Those few minutes outside always make me feel more connected and less stressed. I feel like no matter what the day or my life might bring, I’ll be fine in the end.
If you live in an apartment without outdoor space, just open your windows wide and take a few deep breaths of fresh air.
Just connect with something beyond your indoors, and see how much more refreshed and changed you feel as you head into your day.
