Sometimes, they happen for a reason — An argument with your partner, feeling uncertain about the future, or after working for hours on end.
But you might also find your mood dipping for no reason at all, which is fine and normal.
Your mind can’t be in a goodie-good zone at all times, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive to get it in a better space.
I used to wait for my low moods to pass before resuming my routine life, but then I realized it’s not fair to dump the healing process on my brain when it’s already running low on energy.
You might not be able to go from sad to happy in the blink of an eye, but there are always ways to improve your mood by taking small actionable steps.

1. List down your worry points
Unless you’re the Dalai Lama, there are probably a couple of thoughts bouncing in your brain causing stress.
Get them out of your system by listing them down in a journal.
Mention every small little thing that’s troubling you, and end by writing down an uplifting message for yourself to counter those thoughts.

2. Play with an affirmations deck
Sometimes, positive words are all you need to get out of your low mood.
An affirmations deck comes with well-written messages that not only make sense but are also really empowering.
It’s like receiving a message from the universe that everything is going to be just fine.
Shuffle an affirmations deck whenever you find your mood dipping, and carry it with you wherever you go.
3. Get away from your stressors
It might not be possible to distance yourself from every stressor in your life, but you do have the power to cut off the majority of your stressors.
Common examples would be — a negative person, social media, cluttered space, and perfectionism.
Do whatever possible to distance yourself from such stressors and fix the ones that are in your control (like a messy space).

4. Take a nap with guided meditation
When the mind is feeling run down, it’s best to turn it off by going to sleep.
Dim the lights, get cozy in bed, and tune into an hour-long sleep meditation before closing your eyes.
I listen to Michael Seeley and his meditations always work like magic to help me fall asleep quickly.
A nap with guided meditation is the best way to rest your body and recover from whatever has you feeling down in the dumps.
5. Do a body self-care ritual
Gift your body the joy of self-care by doing something that makes you feel good.
You could paint your nails, do a ten-minute stretching routine, or put on a peel-off mask.
Tiny activities like these make you feel pretty and healthy, improving your mood significantly in just a few minutes.
Other things you can try — take a mindful shower, do your skincare routine or, give yourself a massage.
6. Organize a space
It might not be possible to get inside your head and neatly categorize every thought, but you can surely do this for your physical space.
When you organize something, your brain sorts itself out on the inside too.
It’s something that makes you feel in charge of your life and helps you organize your thoughts.
Pick a messy part of your house and do some organizing for ten minutes, even if it’s your skincare drawer or a fruit basket.

Your gut health impacts a lot of areas of your life, from your skin condition to your mental health.
By feeding yourself something nourishing, you can send positivity to your brain.

That might make you a bit skeptical, but it works for me every single time. Healthy gut, happy mind!
8. Read a book in nature
Reading is magic when it comes to giving yourself an escape from the daily hustle, and nature is all about healing and being authentic.
Combine the two and you have the perfect mood-boosting activity.
If you have an hour or two to spare, then grab a book and get outside in nature for a mindful session of reading.
I love this one a lot and mention it in my blog a lot because it makes me feel amazing.
It’s an activity you can indulge in as a way to romanticize your life and make yourself feel like the main character of your story.
9. Practice progressive muscle relaxation
I discovered this technique only recently and can’t believe I didn’t hear about it sooner.
In progressive muscle relaxation, you tense and then relax each muscle group in your body, which releases physical tension in your body and helps you relax mentally.
Begin with the toes and progress upward, tensing each muscle group for 5-10 seconds before releasing it.
This method is quick, effective, and can be done anywhere to lift your mood.
10. Dance it out
Put on your favorite upbeat song and dance around your living room or bedroom.
If you have a terrace, then go there to dance under the stars.
Remind yourself what it’s like to be wild and free by combining the power of movement and music.
Even a single song will work like a charm, but once you get started, I don’t think you’d want to stop (I certainly never do whenever I do this).
11. Walk around with music plugged in
We’ve already looked at some movement-related tips to improve your mood, but this one has to top them all.
I walk whenever I am stressed and it helps me remove every stupid and irrelevant thought in my brain.
You can take a walk during breaks while working, in the evenings, or even after having a meal.
Tune into some feel-good music and have fun walking your stress off.
12. Connect with nature indoors
Whether you’re someone who spends most of their time outdoors or indoors, you need a connection with nature to bloom on the inside.
That’s why your personal space should include some elements of nature that you can spend time with while being indoors.
If you don’t already have one, bring some houseplants home, and spend mindful time with them to boost your mood.
You can also keep a small indoor fountain in your living room and relax to the sound of trickling water.
If nothing, sit near the window with your face exploded to sunlight, and enjoy a cup of herbal tea to enhance your vibes.
13. Try color therapy
As a kid, everyone loves coloring stuff. From books to walls, we have a strong urge to color everything in sight, because we have a need to make everything interesting and colorful.
Who says we can’t carry that need with us as adults?
Whenever you find your mood deteriorating, spend a few minutes coloring in a coloring book designed for adults (or for kids, for that matter).

And when you’re done, treat yourself with a piece of chocolate or your favorite beverage.
If you can find the time to cook your reward yourself, it’d be even better and more wholesome.

I know when you’re feeling down, it can feel as if nothing is right and like you can’t do anything to change your thought process.
