When it’s cold outside, I am very happy being home with a warm drink, a good book, and no reason to put on real clothes.
But you know what else winter is good for? Gathering your favorite people!
The vibes are cozy and magical, and the conversations can flow very easily when there aren’t other distractions around.
So, if you’re looking for an excuse to invite your people over, I’ve put together 35 winter party ideas that range from extremely easy to more elaborate.
All of these ideas have major winter vibes, and you can easily mix and match a couple of them to create your version of a winter party.

1. Winter solstice party
The shortest day of the year (21st December) is a pretty good reason to gather people and celebrate the official arrival of winter.
Have everyone over around sunset, light loads of candles, bring out the fairy lights, and make the whole evening feel warm and glowy while it’s dark outside.
Serve mulled cider, hot chocolate, soup, and fresh bread. And decorate with oranges, pinecones, dried flowers, greenery, and other natural wintery things.
A fun activity for this party would be to have everyone write down something they want to leave behind with the old season and something they want to welcome into the new one.
This would certainly be more magical, cozy, and memorable than spending the longest night of the year scrolling on your couch.
2. Have a cottagecore party
Cottagecore gets all the attention during spring, but I have always found it a better fit for winter.
If you are obsessed with the winter cottagecore aesthetic like me, then this idea is for you.
Invite your friends over for the winter version of cottagecore.
You all can dress up in chunky cardigans, knitted socks, ribbons, and long skirts (basically any outfit that looks like you are getting ready to shoot a baking scene in a movie).
Decorate with gingham, candles, dried oranges, baskets, old books, greenery, little jars, and mismatched plates.
And serve homemade bread, soup, jam, little cakes, tea, and something freshly baked (full commitment to cottagecore).
You could even spend part of the party making dried-orange garlands, decorating candles, knitting, or baking something together.

Wrap them around windows, drape them across walls, fill glass jars with them, and add candles around the room for even more glow.
Keep the rest of the party simple with warm drinks, good food, music, and plenty of blankets and cushions around for people to get comfortable.
People can wear something sparkly or shimmery to match the theme.

Instead of complaining about how early it gets dark, make the darkness the entire theme of your party.
Invite everyone over after sunset and declare the overhead lights officially banned for the evening.

Plan enough games and snacks to keep everyone around until late, and save your best dessert for midnight
This would be especially fun around the winter solstice, but honestly, any dark winter evening will do.

This might be one of my favorite weird winter party ideas. It’s just so cozy!
Get a bunch of chunky yarn, ask everybody to pick a color, and spend the evening learning how to knit or crochet very long scarves.
Nobody needs to arrive knowing what they’re doing.
Just put a beginner tutorial on the TV, order food, make drinks, and collectively struggle until everybody has at least several inches of scarf.
Keep working on them whenever you meet throughout winter, or take your projects home and see who actually finishes first.
There are no prizes. The scarf is the prize.
14. Foggy morning breakfast party
Okay, I LOVE this one.
Instead of inviting everybody over at night, tell your favorite people to arrive early on a cold and foggy winter morning.
Pajamas and giant sweaters are encouraged.
Make pancakes, waffles, eggs, toast, cinnamon rolls, hash browns, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, then sit around the table eating while the morning slowly gets brighter outside.
You could even go for a short foggy walk together afterward if anybody is willing to abandon the warmth.
There’s something so fun about seeing your friends at an hour when you’d normally all be hiding in your own houses.
And yes, everybody is allowed to go home and take a nap afterward.
15. Make dried orange garlands
If your ideal winter evening involves making something pretty while your entire house smells amazing, here you go.
Dry orange slices beforehand or do that part together, then put out string, cinnamon sticks, wooden beads, greenery, and ribbon.
Play music, make warm drinks, and let everybody work on their creations while talking.
Hang the garlands around the house as you finish or let everyone take theirs home.
It’s simple, inexpensive, and one of those parties where people can actually talk because nobody is screaming over a competitive game.

Ask people to fill thermoses with something hot, bring blankets, and head somewhere you can see a decent amount of sky.
You can use a stargazing app to find constellations and planets (I have been loving doing this).
Bring easy snacks and enough layers so that nobody spends the entire time talking about how cold they are.
This is especially fun with a smaller group because you don’t really need much entertainment. The big night sky will carry the party for you.
17. Pajama party
If I am being asked to leave my warm house during winter, being allowed to arrive somewhere in pajamas definitely sweetens the deal.
So, tell your guests to come over wearing their comfiest pajamas, fluffy socks, robes, or whatever they wear while hibernating at home.
Pile blankets and cushions around the living room, order dinner, make something warm to drink, and put on movies in the background.
You can play board games, do face masks, eat snacks, gossip, and act like you’re all fifteen again.
You don’t have to turn it into a sleepover. But if everybody ends up staying until 2 am anyway, you might as well have spare blankets ready.

A winter party list without a movie marathon just sounds wrong, so as cliché as this idea is, I am adding it in.
You could do Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, Little Women, Frozen, classic rom-coms, old Disney movies, or whatever your group loves.
Make popcorn, order pizza, put out bowls of candy and chips, and make a giant batch of hot chocolate.
The dress code is obviously cozy clothes, and anyone who shows up in jeans is taking the theme far too seriously.
20. Soup and bread night
Some parties need balloons and decorations, but this one needs bread.
You can make one big pot of soup, ask everyone else to bring another one, or choose two different soups so people can try both.
Then fill the rest of the table with supporting side dishes like warm bread, garlic bread, crackers, cheese, butter, little toppings, and dessert.
You can sit around the table for ages, go back for seconds, and let dinner be the entire activity.

You don’t need an official book club to have a book club night.

You don’t need to be super good at decorating cookies for this one. In fact, I think it’s more fun if nobody is.
Bake a batch of cookies beforehand or buy plain cookies, then cover the table with icing, sprinkles, melted chocolate, candies, and piping bags.
Everybody gets a plate of cookies to decorate and total creative freedom. They can make snowflakes, mittens, stars, little houses, or hearts.
Pack up the leftovers at the end so everyone has a box to take home.
24. Set up a baked potato bar
This might not be the fanciest party idea on this list, but please hear me out.
Bake a giant batch of potatoes and put every topping you can think of on the table.
Cheese, butter, sour cream, spring onions, beans, corn, sautéed vegetables, shredded chicken, sauces, herbs — whatever your group likes.
Then everybody builds their own loaded potato.
Add some snacks, warm drinks, and dessert, and you’ve got an extremely easy winter dinner party where the main meal basically takes care of itself.

I especially love this one around the start of a new year, but you can do it anytime you’re craving some fresh energy.
Your group will need old magazines, printed-out pictures, scissors, glue, stickers, markers, and big sheets of paper.
And then you make your vision boards together.
They can be serious goal boards, aesthetic mood boards, or collections of things you want more of in your life.
Order food, put on a good playlist, and spend the evening cutting and sticking while talking about what you’re excited about.
26. Make your party snow-themed
You do not need actual snow for this one.
As someone who cannot simply summon a snowy winter outside my window, I refuse to let geography ruin the theme.
Go all in on white, silver, icy blue, snowflakes, fairy lights, and anything that makes the room feel like your own winter wonderland.
Ask everyone to wear white or light colors, make snowy-looking desserts, serve drinks in pretty glasses, and create a winter playlist.
It’s a particularly fun theme if your actual winter is cold but disappointingly snow-free.

Outdoor picnics are one of my favorite things, but during winter, sitting on cold grass isn’t charming at all.
So bring the picnic inside!
Spread a blanket across your living room floor, pile cushions around it, and serve picnic foods like sandwiches, fruit, pastries, cheese, crackers, desserts, and drinks.
Put flowers in a jar, play music, and definitely use a picnic basket if you own one.
You get all the fun of a picnic without losing sensation in your fingers. A win for everybody!
