Here are 25 cozy things to do when you have some time to spare and would like to create happiness, comfort, and joy within yourself and around you.

I am the kind of person who can turn almost anything into an excuse to get cozy.
If it’s raining, I make tea and sit down for a long reading session. If it’s cold, then obviously I need a blanket and a comfort show.
And if it’s been a long week…I think you know where this is going.
But as much as I love turning to a cozy routine to relax, you don’t need a reason (like gloomy weather or a tiring day) to get into your cozy mood.
Without even meaning to, I have been reserving cozy activities and routines for specific occasions only, but I want more coziness in my everyday life.
I think we all need to slow down and spend time doing things that make us feel warm, comfortable, and happy. We don’t need to treat coziness as a reward system at all.
So, if you have a free weekend coming up or just don’t know what to do with yourself today, here are 25 cozy things to do at home and outside.
25 Cozy Things To Do For a Comfy Time
1. Bake cinnamon rolls from scratch
I know you can buy perfectly good cinnamon rolls, but making them yourself is much more fun.
Find a simple recipe, put on some music, and spend time making the dough, rolling it out, adding way too much cinnamon, and waiting impatiently for everything to rise.
Your kitchen will smell amazing once they go into the oven, and you get warm cinnamon rolls at the end of it.
Save this one for a slow Sunday when you have nowhere else to be!

2. Start a 500-piece cottage puzzle
I have recently developed a greater appreciation for hobbies that don’t involve staring at a screen, and puzzles are my newest obsession as a result.
Get yourself a 500-piece puzzle with a picture you actually enjoy looking at.
A little cottage, bookstore, garden, snowy village, or pretty landscape would be perfect for the cozy theme.
Don’t try to finish it all in one sitting.
Leave it somewhere you can come back to and work on every evening while listening to music or an audiobook.
It’ll be so very satisfying slowly watching the picture come together over a few days.
3. Finish a book in one day
Pick a short book, clear your schedule, and see if you can finish the entire thing before you go to bed.
I would personally go for something around 200 pages so that this remains a cozy activity rather than turning into a sport.
Make yourself a nice breakfast, find a sunny spot to read in the morning, move to the couch in the afternoon, and take the book to bed with you at night.
You can even order your favorite food for dinner so that nothing interrupts your reading marathon.
Basically, give yourself permission to disappear into somebody else’s world for a day.

4. Have a Soup and grilled cheese night
This is especially good on a rainy or cold evening when you want dinner to feel like a hug.
Make a big bowl of your favorite soup and a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it. Tomato soup is the obvious classic here, but you can make whatever you actually like!
Then, take your dinner to the couch and put on a cozy movie.
I know we’re talking about a very simple meal here, but soup, grilled cheese, and a movie is a full event when the weather outside is gloomy.
5. Make homemade hot chocolate
And I seriously mean make hot chocolate, rather than adding powder to hot milk.
Melt some chocolate into milk on the stove and make it as rich as your heart desires.
Add marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon, chocolate shavings, or whatever else you have around.
Pour it into your favorite mug and drink it somewhere comfortable while it’s still steaming hot.
You can also experiment with different versions throughout winter until you find your perfect recipe.
A personal hot chocolate recipe seems like an excellent thing to have in life.

6. Build a living room camp
This is one of my favorite ways to make a regular night at home feel different.
You can spread blankets on the floor, bring down every pillow you can find, and set up your camp in front of the TV.
Bring your dinner and snacks here, watch movies, play board games, read, or just hang out.
You can do this alone, but it’s even more fun with your partner, sibling, or best friend.
We stop doing silly things like this once we grow up, which is a shame because lying on a pile of blankets while eating snacks is just as wonderful at 25 as it was at 10.
7. Go on a bookstore date with yourself
Find a bookstore nearby and give yourself plenty of time to wander in it.
Browse the new releases, pick up random books because you like their covers, read the backs, and visit sections you don’t normally look at.
If the bookstore has a cafe, you can get yourself a drink afterward and start reading whatever you bought.
You could easily spend two or three hours doing this, and I think it’s one of the nicest solo dates for anyone who loves books.

8. Make friendship bracelets
I love activities like these where your hands are occupied, but your brain doesn’t have to work particularly hard.
Get some colorful beads or embroidery thread and spend an afternoon making friendship bracelets.
You can make them for your actual friends, make matching ones with your bestie, or simply make a few for yourself.
Put on a comfort show while you’re working and don’t worry too much about making them look perfect.
Unlike spending two hours scrolling, you’ll actually have something cute to show for your time afterward.
9. Have a candlelit reading hour
This one is extremely simple but so nice.
Once it gets dark, turn off the bright overhead lights, light a candle, make yourself a warm drink, and read for an hour.
Keep your phone somewhere away from you so that you’re not reaching for it every four minutes without realizing it.
If you’re reading fantasy, mystery, or an old classic, the candlelight will make the whole thing even better.
I would happily spend every winter evening like this if life didn’t insist on having other plans for me.

10. Make yourself an afternoon tea tray
Instead of grabbing your afternoon tea and going back to whatever you were doing, make a cozy event out of it.
Brew a proper pot of tea and put together a tray with cookies, cake, fruit, or tiny sandwiches.
Use the pretty cup.
I repeat: Use the pretty cup!
Take everything to your balcony, bedroom, living room, or wherever you feel like sitting and give yourself half an hour to enjoy it.
You do not need guests to make a fuss over afternoon tea.
11. Watch a movie from your childhood
Pick a movie you were obsessed with when you were little and haven’t watched in years.
You can go with an old Disney movie, Harry Potter, a Christmas movie you watched every year, or a random movie your family happened to own on DVD.
Get the snacks you would’ve loved as a kid and settle in for the evening.
I love revisiting old movies because you remember so many tiny things while watching them. Sometimes, you can practically remember the room you used to watch them in.
That’s a different kind of cozy altogether.

12. Do a paint-by-numbers kit
If staring at a blank canvas and being told to ‘just paint something’ sounds stressful rather than relaxing, get yourself a paint-by-numbers kit.
You already know exactly where every color needs to go, so all you have to do is sit down and paint!
Pick a design you’d actually like to hang somewhere afterward and work on it over several evenings.
Put on some soft music, make yourself tea, and paint until you get bored.
It’s one of those activities that makes time pass surprisingly fast without you checking your phone every ten minutes.
13. Make pancakes for dinner
Breakfast for dinner will never stop being fun to me, which is why this idea had to be in here.
Make a stack of pancakes, add some fruit and maple syrup, and have eggs, hash browns, or whatever else you want on the side.
You can go all out and make a proper breakfast spread or keep it ridiculously simple.
You’ll be eating pancakes at a time when pancakes have no business being there. I think there’s something very strangely exciting about that.

14. Spend an afternoon at the library
Libraries might be one of the coziest places you can go without spending money.
Find a library near you and spend a slow afternoon wandering through the shelves.
Pick out a few books that look interesting, flip through magazines, find a quiet corner, and start reading.
I love the idea of doing this when you have nothing planned for the weekend and don’t really want to stay home all day.
You still get to go somewhere, but nobody expects you to talk, dress up, or do anything particularly energetic. Perfect!
15. Have a themed movie marathon
You could watch the first few Harry Potter movies, have a Studio Ghibli marathon, pick three cozy rom-coms, revisit your favorite Disney movies, or spend the day inside a fantasy world.
Match your snacks to the theme if you’re feeling creative.
You can also get your friends involved and have everyone bring one snack.
It’s much more fun to say, “I’m having a Harry Potter marathon today” than saying, “I watched four movies because I didn’t know what else to do.”

16. Make a simmer pot
This is technically something you can have simmering while you’re doing another cozy activity, but I think it deserves a place on the list.
Fill a pot with water and add things like orange slices, apple peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, rosemary, or vanilla.
Let it simmer gently on the stove and keep adding water whenever needed. Of course, keep an eye on the stove while it’s going.
Your house will slowly start smelling amazing.
This makes for a lovely fall ritual when you have apples and oranges around anyway and want your kitchen to smell like you’ve been baking all day without actually baking all day.
17. Start a crochet project
If you’ve always wanted to learn crochet, pick a simple project and give it a try.
A scarf is a good place to start because you’re basically making one long rectangle, which is difficult to mess up.
Find a beginner tutorial, get yourself some soft yarn, and practice while watching TV.
Your first creation might not be something you’d proudly sell on Etsy, but who cares?
You’ll have spent a few cozy evenings learning something new, and hopefully you’ll end up with a slightly wonky scarf you love anyway.

18. Make cookies at night
There is regular baking, and then there is deciding at 8 pm that the evening needs freshly baked cookies.
I highly recommend the second.
Make a small batch so that you’re not dealing with three dozen cookies afterward.
Chocolate chip is obviously a safe choice, but go with whatever you’re craving.
Put on music while you bake and eat at least one cookie while it’s still warm enough for the chocolate to be melty.
Then take a couple to bed with a book or movie.
Not every good decision needs to contribute to your five-year plan, and this is proof of that.
19. Fill in an adult coloring book
I used to think coloring books were purely a childhood activity, but honestly, children were onto something.
Sitting quietly and deciding whether a flower should be pink or purple is a lovely problem to have.
Get yourself one of those detailed coloring books and a nice set of colored pencils.
Pick a page you love, put on an audiobook or podcast, and start coloring.
You don’t need to finish the entire page in one go.
In fact, it’s nicer to have something you can keep coming back to whenever you’re bored and don’t want to pick up your phone.

20. Go on a walk to find the coziest house
I love having a mission when I go for a walk, and this is a cozy one.
On your next evening walk, see if you can find the coziest-looking house in your neighborhood.
Look for warm glowing windows, tiny gardens, pretty porches, fairy lights, plants, interesting doors, and houses that make you wonder what life is like inside.
Obviously, admire from the street like a normal person.
It will make you pay attention to all the details around you instead of walking the same route feeling nothing.
21. Have a reading-in-bed morning
Pick a weekend morning when you don’t have anywhere to rush off to and stay in bed with your book.
Make yourself tea or coffee, bring it back to your room, and spend an hour reading while you’re still tucked under the blankets.
You can open the curtains, put on some quiet music, and let the morning unfold slowly.
I usually love getting out of bed and starting my day, but every once in a while, staying there feels wonderfully luxurious!

22. Make a scrapbook page of your current life
You don’t have to wait for a big trip, birthday, or special event to make a scrapbook.
Make one page about your life right now!
Print a few recent pictures, add a cafe receipt, a tiny note, a wrapper from something you loved, a dried flower, or a movie ticket.
Write the date somewhere and add a few sentences about what life currently looks like.
It’ll be so lovely to flip through these pages years later and remember ordinary periods of your life that would’ve otherwise blurred together.
23. Play a cozy video game
If you usually associate video games with shooting things or being yelled at by strangers online, allow me to introduce you to the much gentler side of gaming.
Try a cozy game where you can decorate houses, grow things, explore pretty worlds, or generally exist without the fate of humanity resting on your shoulders.
Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Unpacking, and The Sims are good places to start.
Get yourself a snack, put on your comfiest clothes, and disappear into your tiny digital world for a while.
Sometimes, rearranging somebody else’s virtual furniture is exactly what an evening needs.
24. Make your own pizza and eat it on the floor
Get pizza dough or make your own, put out a few toppings, and create your perfect pizza.
If you’re doing this with someone else, make individual pizzas so that everybody can add whatever they want.
Once they’re ready, spread a blanket on the living-room floor and eat there while watching a movie.
Is there any logical reason pizza tastes better when eaten during an indoor picnic? No.
But I’m fairly certain it does.

25. Listen to an audiobook while doing a puzzle
This might be one of the coziest combinations on the entire list.
Pick a puzzle you’ve been wanting to start and an audiobook you’re genuinely excited about.
Make yourself something warm to drink, clear the table, and spend the next couple of hours doing both.
You get to be completely absorbed in a story while still having something to do with your hands, which makes it especially nice if you struggle to sit still and simply listen.
And unlike watching TV, you’re not looking at another screen.
I can already picture myself doing this on a rainy afternoon, and frankly, I would like that afternoon to arrive right now.
Give Yourself More Cozy Moments and Days!
We often associate cozy days with being tired, having nothing to do, or waiting for bad weather to give us an excuse to stay inside.
But you can also plan them simply because they’re fun!
You can make cinnamon rolls on a Sunday morning, take yourself to a bookstore, eat pizza on the living-room floor, spend three hours working on a puzzle, or decide that tonight is apparently a friendship-bracelet night.
These activities aren’t difficult or particularly groundbreaking, but they can make a normal day feel so much nicer.
So, the next time you have some free time and find yourself automatically opening social media because you have nothing else to do, pick something from this list instead.
You won’t regret it, I promise!
