I mean, there’s nothing quite like the comfort of home, right?
It’s your safe space, your crash pad, where you have complete freedom to be yourself and do whatever the heck you want.
But people usually don’t take the right advantage of their sanctuaries.
After a long and exhausting day, if all you are doing at home is lounging on the couch scrolling through your Instagram feed, then you are denying yourself the joy of relaxation that only your home can give you.
Fancy spa treatments, eating at luxurious restaurants, and weekend vacations are good when you are looking to splurge occasionally.
But when it comes to everyday recharging, your home is all you need, along with some soothing activities to activate your rest mode.
In this post, we’ll look at 12 lovely ways to unwind, de-stress, and relax within the comfort of your four walls.

1. Create A Calming Atmosphere
It’s easier to find peace in your mind when you are surrounded by calmness and positivity.
Create a relaxing atmosphere for yourself by tidying up your space and taking a few steps to beautify it.
Dim the lights, light some soothing candles (or an essential oil diffuser), and turn on some soft music.
All of this will hardly take a few minutes, but you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into your own personal spa.
It’s also an effective way to signal to your mind and body that it’s time to let go of worries and unwind.

2. Take A Soothing Bath Or Shower
There’s nothing like the healing properties of water to de-stress.
Draw yourself a warm bath infused with calming bath salts or your favorite essential oils. You can also add some flower petals to keep it natural.
Let the hot water soothe your muscles and melt away tension.
If you’re short on time, a relaxing shower with your favorite body wash can work wonders too.
I sometimes create a short playlist depending on my mood before stepping into the shower.
It’s a good trick to make your shower feel like a special self-care ritual instead of a mundane activity.
3. Pamper Your Body
Take the time to truly pamper your body and indulge in some self-care.
Regardless of whether you’ve had a busy day or a lazy one, your body deserves some tender loving and caring.
Here are some of my favorite ways to relax the body at home:

- Put on a hydrating face mask
- Apply body lotion on your skin
- Dip your feet in hot water
- Put on a gentle lip balm

If you want to escape the everyday monotony, then reading is the ultimate activity for that.
Once you’ve relaxed your body with a shower or a skincare routine, put on your comfy clothes and cozy up in your reading nook with a book.
Choose something that sparks joy in your heart. It could be a light and fluffy romance (my cup of tea) or a fantasy historical fiction.
If you’re on a path to growth and improvement, then go for a self-help book to guide your mind.

5. Unplug To Truly Relax
It can be hard to relax at home with work notifications pinging on your phone.

To make space for true relaxation, give yourself a digital detox.
Step away from your phone and computer screens for a fixed time period (like an hour or two) and give yourself a much-needed break from the stimulation of technology.
6. Breathe Deeply For A Few Minutes
For a quick physical and mental recharge, focus on deep breathing for a few minutes.
It’s a simple yet powerful way to tap into your healing energies and become aware of the now.
Find a quiet spot in your home, close your eyes, and focus on slow, deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
Do this until you feel a sense of calm wash over you and open your eyes to a more present you.
7. Cook Yourself A Nice Meal
I am not a fan of everyday cooking, but as a hobby, I totally dig it.
Dragging yourself to the kitchen can seem exhausting when you’re tired, but once you start cooking, you’ll find yourself relaxing and having fun.
Look up a recipe online, gather the ingredients, and cook yourself a nice meal while grooving to music.
Do this enough times and you’ll have some awesome recipes under your belt.
I, for one, can make a mean pasta and cold coffee (nothing special to brag about, I know, but it tastes sooo good).

8. Stretch It Out
Yoga and stretching aren’t just about improving your flexibility. They’re hailed for their beautiful effects on the mental health.
Holding stretching poses can trigger the release of endorphins, which are your body’s natural feel-good chemicals.
The best thing is you don’t need any fancy equipment or a studio for this.
There are many stretching routines on YouTube that you can hit play on at home. Some of them can even be done in bed!
Even ten minutes of stretching can do wonders for your mind and body.

9. Write It Down
Sometimes, getting your thoughts on paper is all you need to do to unwind.
Sit down with your journal, and create a fresh entry about your day, worries, or anything else on your mind.

Your purpose here is to dump all your intrusive thoughts and help yourself release what doesn’t serve you.

10. Embrace The Art Of Doing Nothing
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel guilty about taking time for ourselves.
However, scheduling ‘nothing time’ can be a powerful way to recharge and relax.
Give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing for a set period. I usually go for 15 minutes.
You could spend this time lounging on the couch with your eyes closed or in bed blinking at the ceiling (whatever nothing looks like to you).
Resist the urge to check your phone or social media during your ‘nothing time’ and just let your mind wander freely.
If you start getting restless, take slow, deep breaths and bring your awareness to the present.
This might seem silly in the beginning, but this practice will teach you to embrace who you are without materialism and bring you closer to your relaxed self.
11. Gaze At The Stars From Your Balcony Or Window
If you have a balcony or a window with a clear view of the night sky, then do some quiet stargazing.
You can also download a stargazing app to identify constellations and planets, or simply sit down and marvel at the vastness of the universe.
I love keeping track of the moon cycles and have even started recording its phases in my notepad.
To make this more interesting, tune into a fun podcast alongside, or do some journaling while breathing in the fresh night air.
Nature is the best companion for relaxing, and being able to access it from the comfort of your home is pure joy for your soul.
12. Enjoy A Sitcom While Sipping Tea
A cup of steaming tea and a funny sitcom is a classic recipe for relaxation.
Make your favorite tea and pour it into a lovely cup. Then curl up in bed with a sitcom you love and enjoy it while sipping your tea.
I’m currently on my ninth rerun of ‘Friends’.
It’s now become a night ritual for me to make chai and watch two episodes of this iconic show before turning out the lights.
I normally avoid screens before bed but this is acting like a stress-buster, so I’m gonna stick to it until I finish the series.

We’re living in a world where people are used to walking around with stress as if it’s a normal thing, when in reality, relaxation is the ultimate state you should be aiming for.
