As humans, we don’t quite know how to prioritize our mental health.
We live in the age of productivity and end up attaching all our self-worth to how much we’re doing rather than how we’re living.
Of course, it’s important to set goals and aim for success. Life is spicier when you have ambitions and challenges fueling your purpose.
But something that should never ever be put on the back burner is your mental health.
Your brain might thrive on the idea of staying busy, but at its core, it’s always looking for constant nourishment. And when you fail to prioritize its well-being, that’s when you experience mental burnout.
Now, I am a full-time blogger, so I need to stay disciplined all the time to keep my business going. But even after a year of doing this, there are still days when I forget to recharge and end up exhausting myself.
The good news is, those phases have been occurring few and far between. And what’s helped me make this change is prioritizing my mental health on a daily basis.

How To Prioritize Your Mental Health Every Day
1. Start Your Day With A Self-Care Ritual
It’s hard to prioritize your mind’s health if you start your day on a fast note.
When you wake up in the morning, your first thought shouldn’t be about your work or all the things you need to get done before 10 AM.
You should indulge in self-care, slow down your thoughts, and tune into the present moment before you even begin to think about productivity.
(And just in case you didn’t know, self-care is, in fact, a productive habit in its own right. And it just so happens to be my favorite kind.)
Here are some morning self-care rituals to kickstart your day with:
- Drink a glass of warm water while counting your blessings.
- Sip coffee or tea on your porch.
- Journal your thoughts.
- Run an ice roller on your face while practicing body positivity.
- Read a book in your favorite corner of the house.
- Go outside for a walk and tune into a podcast.
You can create a slow morning routine using these tips, but even one of these self-care rituals will be powerful enough to leave a good impact on your mind.
I do yoga some mornings but mostly prefer going for walks. Morning journaling has become a permanent fixture at this point as it helps me practice mindfulness and feel content in life.

2. Know Your Limits
I love the optimism I feel after telling myself that sky is the limit, but there it doesn’t feel so good to push my limits when all my mind is asking for is some rest.
Whether you’re a girl boss, a school-going kid, or a beautiful mama, it’s always wise to stop when you’re exhausted.
For example, I usually send out two posts a week, but when I’m on the roll, I go for three or four. But then comes a time when my mind just doesn’t want to churn any new content.
If I didn’t give myself time to relax during this period, I’d never be able to be consistent with my work.
You should always be in touch with your inner self. When your mind is sending you signals that it’s done for the day, you should stop without trying to do more.
You can come back to your work tomorrow, but as we’ve already established, mental health needs to be prioritized at all times.

3. Turn off Your Phone For Sometime
The phone might be an amazing little device, but it’s not meant to be in your sight 24/7. The oncoming calls, texts, and notifications can cause stress and make you turn away from mindfulness.
It isn’t a bad idea at all to turn off your phone for an hour or two during the day. It could be an hour before your bedtime, right before you start your self-care night routine. Or it could be when you go out for a walk.
How about going to the gym or the shopping complex without your phone? It can be freeing to do your routine tasks without being attached to your phone.
In fact, whenever I’m looking to do a mental detox, turning off my phone is the first thing I do before sitting down with my journal. Unplugging is also a form of everyday self-care.
With no phone to block your attention, you’ll also be able to enjoy solitude on a deeper level and make your personal time with friends and family count.
4. Seek Nature For Mental Recharge
Nature is the best healer, and it should be a part of your everyday life regardless of the kind of routine you have.
Doesn’t matter if you go to the office or work from home, you need nature and its healing tendencies to give yourself a natural mental boost.
You can go outside for a walk, sit in a park listening to the sounds around you, or do yoga on the grass. Take yourself out on solo dates in green areas and organize hiking trips with your friends.
Incorporate nature into your morning routine and grab some fresh air at night before bed. You can grow some plants in your backyard or bring a single plant home for a sunlit corner of your house.
I’d suggest making a cozy reading corner in your home where you can access fresh air from. It’ll give you a peaceful reprieve from the outer world.
Few things in the world can give you the kind of positive energy that only nature can.
So, learn to seek it out on a daily basis and let those green moments be your way to prioritize your mental health.
5. Say Yes To The Right Things
It’s important to find the right balance between saying yes and saying no to opportunities. Sometimes, in an effort to be a naysayer, you might end up missing out on some important life lessons.
So, I won’t tell you to learn to say to people, because it feels good to help out or show up for events that might end up surprising you.
We set ourselves up for a learning curve when we say yes more often, but at the same time, it’s important to say yes to the right things.
If you feel exhausted after doing certain tasks or being in the company of certain people, you need to minimize your exposure to such things in the future. Nobody else can do this for you.
Be adventurous, try new things out, and show up when people need you. But don’t hesitate to cross some items off your list when you realize they don’t add much value to your life.
At the end of the day, the more things you are doing that seem right to your being, the easier life will be for you.

6. Do More Of What You Love
We often try to achieve goals before even thinking about doing activities that fill our souls. And I get it. Setting rewards for yourself is one of the best ways to stay motivated.
But who says you have to be an achiever in order to enjoy life? Why can’t you be happy right now, right this second? And why do you have to prove your worth to your own self at every step of the way?
The thing about joy is – you deserve to feel it even when you think you’re not being ‘productive’.
In fact, lately, I’ve started detaching my productivity to my happiness, and it’s brought some beautiful changes to my mindset.
There really is no need to set conditions for yourself before doing more of what you love. It could be simple things such as reading, watching a movie, visiting your favorite cafe, or hanging out with a lovely friend.
Sure, use your hobbies or happy activities as rewards for a job done right, but also do these things with the purpose of nourishing your mental health.
Your mind will thank you for this change, I can assure you that.
7. Get Enough Sleep
I’ve spent countless nights in the past staying up to get my pending work done, but now, I’ve made it a point to not do that, because it messes up my body’s clock for days.
Is it necessary to sometimes give up your sleep to stay on top of things? Yes.
But if you have the option to shift around your routine a little so that your bedtime stays fixed, should you do it? Again, yes.
I’ve come to realize that out of all the daily habits related to my overall well-being, sleep is the most important.
You get a good night’s sleep, and your brain will remain active throughout the day. That means more productivity, less stress, and better mental health.
I know for a lot of people, it can be hard to stick to a healthy nighttime routine, simply because life can be too demanding to put your thoughts to bed when you need to.
But again, you are going to have to prioritize the right things here and work on this habit with good intentions.

- Avoid overthinking. It’s a waste of both your time and your precious energy.
- Turn to self-care whenever you feel stressed.
- Adopt some healthy self-love habits to become your own best friend.
- Do a brain dump on your journal.
- Meditate for at least 15 minutes a day.
