There is a lot of hype around new year festivities, but we rarely talk about things to do before new year.
You know, the period where there’s just one month (a week or even a day!) left before the clock chimes in 12 and throws you headfirst into a brand new year.
Many people are busy enjoying the last few chunks of the old year, fully giving in to the unhealthy habits they plan on quitting from 1st January onward.
I’m not here to be a spoilsport. You should absolutely give in to the cozy winter vibes and enjoy the holiday treats. Comfort food and blanket reading do make a perfect duo.
But I also want to make the job of transitioning into the new year easier for you.
I have a pre-new-year checklist that I tick off every year to avoid entering the new phase in my life as a hot mess.
It keeps me from getting overwhelmed during the first month of the new year, and I am also able to focus better on my resolutions and new habits.
If you want to jump on board and wrap up 2024 on a good note, then this post is perfect for you.
In this post, we’ll look at 12 mindful things to do before new year so that you can ring in 2025 with a stress-free mind.
Expect this checklist to be a perfect mix of self-care, productivity, organization, and planning for a hassle-free new year.
Let’s dive in!
12 Things You Should Do Before New Year
1. Reflect On The Past Year
Before starting a new chapter in life, it’s important to take some time to reflect on your past.
This reflection can help you set better goals going forward, take key lessons from your past mistakes avoid the mistakes, and be more mindful of your plans for the upcoming year.
Think about the highlights, challenges, and lessons from the past year.
What did you accomplish? What do you wish you had done differently?
Write down your realizations in single sentences on a piece of paper or in your journal.
This is what my reflection for 2024 is looking like so far:
- I love that I was on a routine most of the days.
- I am grateful to my body for being consistent with my workouts.
- I wish I’d gone on more walks though.
- Self-care was missing for the most part, but I’m making up for it now in winter.
- I could have gone out more and been more social. Looking forward to doing more of that next year.
Feel free to add more reflection points in your entry as you get closer to 2025.
This is a simple ritual but will help you be more insightful going forward and really help you make better decisions, I promise.

2. Decide Your Goals And Resolutions
New Year’s resolutions are a common tradition, and they make the onset of a year more exciting and challenging.
You might think you already know what kind of resolutions you want to set for 2025, but it can’t hurt to sprinkle in more mindfulness.
Think about what you want to achieve in the coming year, both personally and professionally.
Make your goals specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and even time-bound (if it sounds like you.)
If there were any resolutions from 2024 that went unticked, and if you want to reset them for the coming year with renewed determination, then feel free to do so.
Just make sure you change your approach and the tone of your resolution to make it successful this time.
For example, maybe you wanted to shed some weight this year but couldn’t.
So, instead of setting a weight loss resolution, set goals like daily hydration, 5 workouts a week, and mindful eating.
The more specific your goals are, the more likely you will be to succeed with them. It’s just easier for your brain to act upon your intentions this way.
3. Create A Vision Board
A vision board is a visual representation of your goals and aspirations and could turn out to be your best motivator for the coming year.
Very recently, it’s become a popular tool to manifest your dream life and resolutions.
While I haven’t personally tried it myself yet, the success stories around it are crazy and have me sold to try it out in 2025.
Collect images, quotes, and other visual elements that represent what you want to achieve in the coming year, and create a collage or digital board to serve as a visual reminder of your goals.
Visualize what you want your life and your success story to look like by the end of the new year, and then bring it to life on the board.
Month by month, you’ll find yourself getting closer to your vision of life as your board will serve as a visual reminder of everything you can have and are deserving of.

4. Get A New Journal
It cannot be denied that journaling is a productive practice for the mind and a nourishing ritual for the soul. You need it in your life
If you’re an avid journaler, then goodie! I hope your old journal is full enough that you can move on to a new one because if there’s any occasion that calls for a new journal, it’s the new year.
Fresh chapter, fresh pages, and a fresh you!
And if for some reason, you’ve not been journaling so far, then let 2025 be the year when you finally start. Don’t look at it as a chore or a stressful new addition to your routine.
Take it easy, write in it when you want to, and adopt your own unique style to pen down your thoughts.
You could doodle in it, dump your thoughts to declutter your mind, write down affirmations, or use journal prompts to discover yourself one entry at a time.
I’d also suggest buying a new planner. It’ll simplify your 2025 routine and make daily planning stress-free for you.
5. Declutter And Organize
Decluttering can help you start the new year with a fresh and organized mindset, and I would not recommend skipping it for any reason.
Who wants to enter a new year with their shelves and drawers full of clutter, anyway?
Tidy up your living space, donate or discard items you no longer need, and organize your belongings neatly.
Your wardrobe should be spruced up, and all your stationary and books should be arranged in an order that makes sense to you.
Clean the dust off every surface a day or two before the new year to make sure that the first sunlight of the year meets your room while it’s at its best.
If organizing always seems like a behemoth task to you, use this 7-step organizing checklist to get done with this task in record time.
6. Review Your Finances
This post would be incomplete if I didn’t suggest you do a quick budget review of 2024 and plan your finances ahead for the next year.
Before the new year sets in, take a look at your financial situation. You don’t have to dive in too deep, but just enough to be smart about your finances in the future.
Create a budget plan, set savings goals, and plan for any major expenses or investments in the upcoming year.
This will help you be more mindful of your expenses and also be motivated to grow in your career so that your next year can be financially stronger.
7. Create A New Year Bucket List
In 2025, I am looking forward to exploring new places and embracing fresh experiences that will help me grow.
But I know I won’t see my plans through till the end unless I create a bucket list.
It’s fun to list down things that you plan to do before the end of a year.
It romanticizes your fun goals for the year and makes you more likely to actually live the life that you’re dreaming of in your head.
Here are some cool bucket list ideas for the new year:
- Explore three new destinations to expand your cultural perspective.
- Participate in a marathon or go on a demanding hike.
- Volunteer for a local organization to give back to the community.
- Explore a new cafe every month.
- Complete a personal project that’s been on your mind, whether it’s writing a book, painting a mural, or composing a piece of music.
- Skydiving, bungee jumping, or some other thrilling activity.
- Read X number of books.
- Learn a new language or a musical instrument.

8. Take A Solo Trip
Most people add a solo trip to their new year plans, but why not end your year with one too?
It’ll give you a moment for reflection, a chance to disconnect from your routine and tune into yourself.
Whether it’s a serene retreat in the mountains, an exotic beach destination, or an urban adventure, your end-of-year solo trip will become a cherished highlight of your year.
Besides, it’s always good to get out of your comfort zone and do something by yourself.
Even if you can’t take time off to go for a trip, a solo date at a park with a book would work too.
The point is to spend some quality me-time so that you can head into the new year feeling more in tune with yourself.
9. Update Your Calendar
I love shopping for new calendars.
There are some really cozy and cute options available online that will inspire you to plan for your upcoming months and manage your days better.
Get a new calendar for 2025 or update your digital one with important dates, deadlines, and important events for the upcoming year.
This should include birthdays, anniversaries, work-related milestones, and personal goals.
It’s a fun little way to get in your new year spirits, become more organized, and most importantly, reset your life before the start of the year.

10. Have A Self-Care Day
No post on this blog will ever be written without the mention of self-care.
Perhaps it’s the exquisite values that this practice has brought to my life or the fact that it’s the ultimate language of self-love, but self-care has become one of my most cherished habits.
Before the year draws to a close, pamper yourself with a self-care day.
Take a long bath (with music, candles, and heavenly essential oils), put on a hydrating face mask, and drink some hot coffee while reading a book.
Paint your nails, listen to a podcast, and do some light stretching to alleviate the tension in your body.
Let this day be all about caring for yourself and doing a mental detox to make way for a healthier, calmer, and happier you.

11. Evaluate Your Relationships
I’ll be honest with you. This is not my favorite part of personal growth.
The fleeting nature of relationships scares me, and I am still learning how to handle the delicacy of my bonds with care and love.
But I also know it’s important to evaluate your relationships from time to time so that you can let go of ties that don’t serve you anymore and make more space for people who fill your life with support and happiness.
Reflect on your personal relationships and consider how you can strengthen or improve them in the coming year.
This may involve setting goals for spending more quality time with loved ones or resolving old conflicts.
Bury grudges, make peace with your foes, and reach out to those who made this new year good for you.

12. Prepare for New Year’s Eve
Finally, plan how you want to celebrate the arrival of the new year.
Whether it’s a quiet evening at home, a gathering with friends and family, or attending a special event, make sure you have your New Year’s Eve plans in order.
Every year, I welcome the new year while reading a book, and then joining my family for midnight celebrations.
This year, I’m planning to go to the rooftop to watch the fireworks with a cup of green tea and a piece of chocolate cake.
That’s very specific, I know, but being detailed like this makes me feel in charge of my plans and resolutions.
What about your plans? Is it going to be friends, family, solo, or a romantic New Year’s Eve for you?
Think, and plan it up in advance. Hope you enjoy whatever you end up going for.

Welcome The New Year On A Powerful Note
Remember that the new year is an opportunity for a fresh start, but you can set and work toward your goals at any time.
It’s okay if the moment is calling for you to just rest and relax (I did include self-care in this checklist).
But if the organizing and planning part of this post is inspiring you to get into your new year groove, then go ahead and get started.
I wish you a happy new era ahead.

You’re very kind and “hit the nail head” every time. I have had over a year of anxiety over helming me with me trying to manage a cluttered home and adjusting to being a “retired “ person. My husband has limitations so I have to be able to assist.
I would love to continue seeing your posts!

Hi, there! ‘Kind’ and ‘nail in the head’ is just the kind of tone I aim for while writing my posts. So, thank you pointing that out.
I can understand feeling anxious trying to manage the clutter. It’s no easy task.
And I’m sure being retired has its perks, but again, not easy to adjust when you’re used to working. I do have some posts on organization on my blog that might be able to help.
I don’t wanna sound like a broken record here, but self-care can really help too. I wish you and your husband a healthier and happier time in the coming year. Hope to see you around again!
